Take the oil marks on your driveway or garage floor and multiply by 48 years and thousands of vehicles. EUGENE, Ore. – Take the oil marks on your driveway or garage floor and multiply by 48 years and thousands of vehicles.

That was the scenario at the downtown Overpark garage.

“This is all part of our downtown deferred maintenance program. It’s been on our list for decades,” Jeff Petry with the City of Eugene said.

So how do you clean it up?

That was the happy task facing Jim Gamble and his crew from Crystal Cleaning Company.

“I think it’s going to get our yearly award for the dirtiest garage,” Gamble said.

Parking has been closed off since last Friday to make room for the team from the San Francisco Bay area.

Gamble said the key is very hot, very pressurized water.

“We’re hitting temperatures of 300 to 350 degrees at 5,000 PSI at over 12 gallons per minute,” he said.

“It’s kind of like a deep carpet cleaner as it goes through the parking garage and then it picks up the water, filters the contaminates out,” Petry added.

For many years, the City has been siphoning off hundreds of thousands of dollars from the city’s parking fund and using that money for other purposes.

Petry said that practice is coming to a close, making more funding available for the $160,000 scrub down.
