  • Karin Clarke Gallery Exhibits January 2nd-February 5th, 2008

    Christopher Bechler
    January 2- February 5

The Karin Clarke Gallery is honored to host the works of reknowned sculptor and artist Jan Zach.

Zach was born in Czechoslovakia in 1914, on the eve of the First World War. During the 1930's, he trained in Prague to become a painter and decorator. He came to New York in 1938 to work on the Czech pavillion for the World's Fair, and never returned to his homeland, due to the invasion of the Nazis in 1939, and the ensuing Communist takeover in 1948. Jan lived in various places, including Rio de Janiero and the countryside of Brazil, Victoria, British Columbia, eventually settling in Eugene in 1958 when the University of Oregon hired him as a professor of sculpture. He passed away in 1986, having retired seven years earlier from the University.

Zach's passion for art, for thinking and living large, and his perspective as a world citizen allowed him to make significant contributions as an artist, teacher, and mentor. He left an impressive body of work, and spawned inspiration in the lives of innumerable students and fellow artists. Tommy Griffin, who studied under Zach in the graduate sculpture program at the UO, recalls showing Zach a small clay maquette for an eight-foot sculpture he was planning. "Jan held...it up to the light, studied it, and said 'Fantastic! But why not eighty feet tall?'"

The natural world inspired most of Zach's work, which became an ongoing expression of the freedom he valued so deeply. His well known sculpture, Prometheus, located outside the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, portays the agony endured, even by a god, who, after trying to help humanity faced the oppression of Zeus .

This exhibit will feature a few Prometheus studies, as well as other sculpture studies, figurative works, set designs, and Brazilian-inspired landscapes. The collection includes works spanning from 1928 to 1979, most of which have never been seen by the public. The vast array of mediums will surprise even those familiar with Zach's work. The show includes drawings, pastels, watercolors, woodblock prints, and oil on canvas, and will also feature a selection of sculptural pieces.

The family owned and operated gallery is located in downtown Eugene, at 760 Willamette Street, ahalf block south of the Hult Center between 7th & 8th Avenues.

The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. You can reach the gallery by calling 541/684-7963 or visit their website.

    Kirk Lybecker: City of Industry
    Solo Exhibition
    Opens January 18, 2008

Kirk Lybecker paints from an aerie perched atop one of Portland’s old warehouse buildings in the Water neighborhood surrounded by an extraordinary amount of golf balls, a huge rubber plant, and a piano. Though his spacious aerie has a bank of windows facing south, Kirk’s easel is secluded in an interior studio bathed in radiant, artificial light. He makes a mean cup of coffee and says with an ironic/philosophical laugh, and a satiric nod to Thomas Kinkade, “I paint urban blight.”

Kirk was born in Tacoma Washington but grew up in Kansas. “I did very poorly in high school but well, they had to take me into college because I graduated from a Kansas high school. I did much better in college. I did much better in physics and chemistry and biology and poorly in English (laughs with irony) much to my bridled embarrassment.

OPUS6IX is a premier purveyor of high quality, exclusive gifts and fine art merchandise. It is a showcase for Artists and Artisans and their masterworks, from sculpture and metal work to glass works and paintings.

Opus6ix is located in downtown Eugene at 22 W 7th Ave, across the street from the Hult Center.  The gallery is open Tuesday- Thursday and Saturday 10:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m., Friday 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Sunday 11:00a.m.- 4:00 p.m..

    Color Impressions: Linocut Reduction Prints
    Connie Mueller

    November 2 - December 8, 2007

White Lotus Gallery opened in June, 1992, and from its inception has focused on art from Asia. Initially, the inventory was dominated by the contemporary Japanese print collection of founding partner Dick Easley.

The prints of Japan's leading 20th century artists remain an important facet of their collection, but from the beginning the dream of gallery director Dr. Hue-ping Lin was to provide a venue in the U.S. for China's contemporary artists, particularly printmakers. Her appreciation of the arts and contacts within Chinese art academies has permitted White Lotus Gallery to assemble one of the largest collections of contemporary Chinese prints in the US. These works, in all print media, range from realistic prints of the Suzhou landscape to abstract prints in the Zen tradition.

White Lotus Gallery is located at 767 Willamette St, Eugene, Or. 97401. For further information visit their website or call 541/345-3276.
