Eugene City Hall Complex Master Planning Project Update
Eugene City Hall Complex Master Planning Project Update
The city council met December 12, 2007 and made a clear choice between two designs, and the public gave additional feedback via comments collected at holiday events around town. Now, the design team is back at work getting ready to show the public the vision we have created together at a final Community Forum. We need your input to see if we are on track with the design concept for the “People’s House” that belongs in Eugene.
Master planning is more than just designing a building. It is a comprehensive study of the goals, parameters, and obstacles, so that the vision that evolves is grounded and do-able. As the specifics of the project are defined, the cost can be determined and realistic financing strategies can be developed.
The city has been saving money to replace city hall by setting aside one-time only income (such as money received from a lawsuit settlement with Qwest), but building costs will exceed that amount. Our work with the public has shown that the city has some other work to do before asking the voters to support a bond to fund a portion of the project, so council decided that they would not ask for voter support until at least 2010. We are currently thinking through the opportunities and challenges that this longer timeline presents, and will be ready to discuss the choices with you at the Community Forum.
Please join us to see the latest evolution of the design and discuss potential paths to a safe, responsible and sustainable city hall for Eugene.
